Kendo tradotto letteralmente significa "Via della spada".
Il Kendo si può definire come una scherma con la spada giapponese in cui, ai fini dell'allenamento, si è sostituita la spada autentica (KATANA) con lo SHINAI, una sorta di bastone composto da quattro stecche di bambù tenute insieme da parti accessorie di cuoio. La sua peculiarità è che l'arma è tenuta di solito con due mani. E' un'arte marziale di origini molto antiche, codificato nella forma attuale durante l'era Meiji (1868-1911). Si può denominare, secondo termini moderni, una disciplina "etico-sportiva", in cui cioè l'aspetto agonistico non è prioritario, bensì subordinato a principi etici quali rispetto, cortesia, lealtà, correttezza, e filosofici attraverso lo stretto legame con lo ZEN.
Citando infine l'ideale del Kendo definito dalla ZEN NIPPON KENDO RENMEI possiamo dire che il Kendo "è una via per la formazione dell'essere umano, attraverso la pratica e lo studio dei principi della spada giapponese".Le tecniche del Kendo quali noi le conosciamo oggi risalgono agli antichi metodi del KEN-JUTSU, o combattimento con la spada. I guerrieri giapponesi attribuivano un'importanza capitale al maneggio delle armi; esse erano un mezzo per servire e difendere l'onore del loro signore o del loro Maestro. The men protects the face, neck, and shoulders. It consists of a facemask with several horizontal metal bars running the entire width of the face, from the chin to the top of the head. To this is attached a long rectangular thick cloth padding that curves over the top of the head and extends to cover the shoulders. A throat protector is attached to the bottom of the facemask. The men is held in place with a pair of woven cords that wrap around the head and are tied at the back. The back of the men is left open for ventilation and the back of the head is unprotected. The target areas of the men are the center top, and upper left and right sides for cutting strikes and the center of the throat protector for a thrust.

The main component of the dō is the gently curving stomach and chest protector. The modern form has a pronounced bulge to help redirect the force of strikes away from the soft areas in the middle of the torso. Lacquered bamboo is traditionally used although lacquered paper "fibre" (frequently misidentified as fiberglass) or molded plastic are used for less expensive dō. The dō is supported from the shoulders by two diagonal ties and is restrained at the small of the back with another set of ties. The target areas of the dō are the two lower sides for a slashing cut to the stomach. The top half of the dō is a valid target for a thrust in naginata. In the kendo past, this was also a valid target for a thrust, but is no longer a permitted target.
The kote are mitten-like gloves. They were designed expressly for kendo. While appearing to be cumbersome, enough mobility is allowed to grip the shinai in a comfortable, powerful, and firm way. Kote for [[naginata]] users have a singulated index finger and thumb to better facilitate the rapid shifting of the hands along the length of the naginata's shaft. Naginata kote have a little less padding than those used for kendo. In the past kote were often made with fully articulated fingers. This is rarely seen today as there can be a safety issue with snagged fingers. A special heavily padded design known as oni-gote (鬼小手おにごて?) are used by some koryu, most notably Itto-ryu. The target area is the wrist portion of each kote.
The tare is a thick cloth belt that wraps around the waist and ties under the front flap in front of the groin. Sturdy cloth covered flaps hang from the belt to protect the upper legs and groin. The flaps run along half of the belt's length, which should be positioned over the front half of the body. The center flap is usually covered with a name tag (zekken (ゼッケン?), or nafuda (名札, なふだ?)) that identifies the name of the wearer and the dōjō or country they represent. There is no target point on tare, it is for protection against off-target and accidental strikes.

EquipmentThe shinai is meant to represent a Japanese sword Katana and is made up of four bamboo slats, which are held together by leather fittings. A modern variation of a shinai with carbon fibre reinforced resin slats is also used.[9]
Kendoka also use hard wooden swords bokutō (木刀?, ぼくとう) to practice kata.[10]
Kendo employs strikes involving both one edge and the tip of the shinai or bokutō. As the design and balance of the weapon is significantly different to that used in European fencing, the footwork and the strikes in kendo are also very different.
The protective armour is worn to protect specified target areas on the head, arms and body.
The head is protected by a stylised helmet men (面?, めん) with a metal grille to protect the face, a series of hard leather and fabric flaps to protect the throat and padded fabric flaps to protect the side of the neck and shoulders.
The forearm, wrist, and hand are protected by long, thickly padded fabric gloves kote (小手?, こて).
The torso is protected by a breastplate dō (胴?, どう), while the waist and groin area is protected by the tare, comprising three thick vertical fabric flaps or faulds tare (垂れ?, たれ).
[edit] ClothingThe clothing worn under the bōgu comprise a jacket (kendogi or keikogi) and hakama, a garment separated in the middle to form two wide trouser legs.[11]

[edit] Modern practiceKendo training is quite noisy in comparison to other martial arts or sports. This is because kendōka use a shout, or kiai (気合い?, きあい), to express their fighting spirit when striking. Additionally, kendōka execute fumikomi-ashi (踏み込み足?, ふみこみあし), an action similar to a stamp of the front foot, when making a strike.
Like some other martial arts, kendoka train and fight barefoot. Kendo is ideally practiced in a purpose-built dōjō, though standard sports halls and other venues are often used. An appropriate venue has a clean and well-sprung wooden floor, suitable for fumikomi-ashi. [2] Modern kendo techniques comprise both strikes and thrusts. Strikes are only made towards specified target areas datotsu-bui (打突-部位?, だとつ-ぶい) on the wrists, head or body, all of which are protected by armour. The targets are men, sayu-men or yoko-men (upper left or right side of the men), the right kote at any time, the left kote when it is in a raised position, and the left or right side of the dō. Thrusts tsuki (突き?, つき) are only allowed to the throat. However, since an incorrectly performed thrust could cause serious injury to the opponent's neck, thrusting techniques in free practice and competition are often restricted to senior dan graded kendoka.
Once a kendoka begins practice in armour, a practice session may include any or all of the following types of practice.
Kiri-kaeshi (切-返し, きり-かえし?): Striking the left and right men target points in succession, practising centering, distance, and correct technique, while building spirit and stamina. Waza-geiko (技-稽古, わざ-げいこ?): waza or technique practice in which the student learns and refines that techniques of Kendo with a receiving partner. Kakari-geiko (掛-稽古, かかり-げいこ?): short, intense, attack practice which teaches continuous alertness and readiness to attack, as well as building spirit and stamina. Ji-geiko (地-稽古, じ-げい?): undirected practice where the kendoka tries all that has been learnt during practice against an opponent. Gokaku-geiko (互角-稽古, ごかく-げいこ?): practice between two kendoka of similar skill level. Hikitate-geiko (引立-稽古, ひきたて-げいこ?): practice where a senior kendoka guides a junior through practice. Shiai-geiko (試合-稽古, しあい-げいこ?): competition practice which may also be judged.
[edit] CompetitionIn competition shiai (試合?, しあい), a point yukō-datotsu (有効-打突?, ゆうこう-だとつ) is only awarded, in principle, when the attack is made to a target area with ki-ken-tai-itchi (気剣体-一致), or spirit, sword and body as one. For an attack to be successful, the shinai must strike the specified target soundly, the contact by the shinai must happen simultaneously with the attacker's front foot connecting with floor, and the kendoka must execute a spirited and convincing ki-ai (気合?) in co-ordination with the strike. For a strike to be deemed sound, the point of contact must fall within the top third of the shinai, and the direction of movement of the shinai must be technically correct. Finally, zanshin (残心?, ざんしん), or continuation of awareness, must be present and shown throughout the execution of the strike, and the kendoka must be ready to attack again.
In competition, there are usually three referees shinpan (審判?, しんぱん). Each referee holds a red flag and a white flag in opposing hands. To award a point, a referee raises the flag corresponding to the colour of the ribbon worn by the scoring competitor. Usually at least two referees must agree for a point to be awarded. The match continues until a pronouncement of the point that has been scored.
Kendo competitions are usually a three point match. The first competitor to score two points, therefore wins the match. If the time limit is reached and only one competitor has a point, that competitor wins.
In the case of a tie, there are several options:
Hiki-wake (引き分け, ひきわけ?): The match is declared a draw. Enchō (延長, えんちょう?): The match is continued until either competitor scores a point. Hantei (判定, はんてい?): The victor is decided by the referees. The three referees vote for victor by each raising one of their respective flags simultaneously

Shinai (竹刀, しない) is a weapon used for practice and competition in kendo and are meant to represent a Japanese sword. Shinai are also used in other martial arts, but may be styled differently from kendo shinai, and represented with different characters.The word "shinai" is derived from the verb shinau (撓う, しなう?), meaning "to bend, to flex", and was originally short for shinai-take (flexible bamboo). Shinai is written with the kanji 竹刀, meaning "bamboo sword", and is an irregular kanji reading.In kendo, it is most common to use a single shinai, sometimes called itto style. Some kendoka choose to use two shinai. This kendo style is usually called ni-tō (二刀, にとう?), a style that has its roots in the two-sword schools of swordsmanship such as Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū. A ni-to combatant uses a long shinai called the daitō (大刀, だいとう?), which is usually held in the left hand, and a shorter shinai, called the shōtō (小刀, しょうとう?), which is usually held in the right hand. The shinai componentsSizes and style of shinai vary. For example, an adult may be able to use a shinai that is too heavy for a younger person, so shinai with different sizes and characteristics are made. Shinai are available in many styles and balances. A shinai should not be confused with a bokutō, which has a much more similar shape and length to a Japanese sword and is made from a single piece of wood. However, both shinai and bokken are used in kendo.The slats of a shinai are usually made from dried bamboo. Some may also be treated by smoking them, or soaking them in resin. Shinai slats are also made of carbon fibre, reinforced resin, or other approved alternative materials.The shinai comprises four slats take (竹?, たけ), which are held together by three leather fittings: a hilt, or handle fitting tsuka-gawa (柄皮?, つかがわ), a fitting at the tip saki-gawa (先皮?, さきがわ) and a leather strip naka-yui (中結?, なかゆい) that binds the four slats. All are secured with a string tsuru (弦?, つる).The nakayui is tied about one-third of the length of the exposed bamboo from the tip . The saki-gawa should be intact and the tsuru should be tight so that the saki-gawa does not slip off the end of the shinai during use. This is a length of bamboo, split multiple times on one end, and covered by a leather sleeve. This explains the name fukuro, which means bag, sack or pouch. Sometimes the more old and rare kanji tō (韜) is used, but has the same meaning as fukuro.Some schools cover the entire bamboo in the sleeve and add a tsuba, like Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryū does. In Shinkage-ryū, the sleeve is lacquered Kamakura Red, and rather than covering the entire length, is tied off at the non-split end. This particular kind of fukuro-shinai is also called a hikihada (蟇肌, ひきはだ?), or toad-skin shinai. The name comes from how the leather looks after lacquering; the sleeves are actually made of cow- or horse-hide.
